Position Description Provide on-site Environment, Health and Safety
(EHS) support to the Ares program manufacturing at the Michoud Assembly
Facility (MAF). Review design drawings, facility layouts, safety plans,
hazard analyses, and operating procedures to derive applicable
manufacturing EHS controls and assure implementation of those controls.
Prepare Job Hazard Analyses (JHA) or other safety control documentation,
as needed. Support facilities design reviews and environmental
permitting and reporting at the MAF. Provide Technical Support to
program engineering and management in the assessment of Ares systems,
facilities, and manufacturing EHS issues. Coordinate with NASA and MAF
Environment and Safety Office representatives, as appropriate.
Coordinate with Ares System Safety organizations to assure all safety
concerns and issues are addressed and adequately controlled. Establish
process requirements based on OSHA regulations, NASA requirements,
and/or Company procedures and policies. The successful candidate must
have the ability to develop written policies and technical procedures as
appropriate to control safety hazards in an evolving environment. The
successful candidate must be able to perform effectively with limited
supervision. The successful candidate must use independent judgment to
perform hazard evaluations of facilities, equipment, processes, and
hazardous chemicals use. This position will require working with live
explosives and propellants, including linear shaped charges. Review
planned manufacturing process and design changes to determine safety
impact to the approved Explosive Site Safety Plan (ESSP). Plan and
conduct Health and Safety assessments to assure compliance, comment
discrepancies, and prepare formal reports. The successful candidate
determines EHS requirements, incorporating risk factors, sampling
procedures, and analytical methods, as appropriate. Document area safety
survey findings, define control measures and track corrective action
plans. Participate in site and company EHS technical committees and
teams. Support development of location/ area specific explosives and
hazardous materials usage safety training. Provide respiratory
protection and handling critical hardware safety training. Perform
accident investigation and root cause analysis.
Typical Education/Experience
Bachelor's degree and typically 9 or more years' related work experience
or a Master's degree with typically 7 or more years' or a PhD degree
with typically 4 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent
combination of education and experience.
REQUIRED: The successful candidate must possess directly related, recent
aerospace or defense programs safety experience. The successful
candidate must have a working ability to apply explosives safety
principles and techniques, as defined in Department of Defense (DoD)
4145.26-M, to ensure safe, reliable and effective risk management
programs. The successful candidate must have the ability to review,
develop and implement ordnance Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to
support training, handling, storage, use, and operations. The successful
candidate must have the ability to develop environment, health and
safety protocols and conduct assessments, reviews and audits to evaluate
the effectiveness of safety programs and processes. Must have the
ability to identify requirements and provide guidance and assistance to
assure compliance with Boeing, DoD, Federal, State and local regulations
and policies. This position requires the ability to obtain access to a
NASA facility. U.S. Citizenship required. Access to the facility
requires a background investigation by U.S. Government authorities. You
may be permitted access to the facility with an interim NASA badge while
your background investigation is ongoing, however, in the event that you
are not granted access by the government authorities, or your access is
not maintained, the result may be reassignment, reclassification, or
termination of employment. This is a sensitive/safety-sensitive position
and is subject to Department of Transportation (DOT) random drug and
alcohol testing.
